Most Common Reasons For Tooth Pain

A+ A- Woman with tooth pain

Perhaps the most common complaint we hear in our office is related to tooth pain. Many people assume that toothaches automatically mean a dental cavity or tooth decay. However, there are many reasons for tooth pain, some of which are completely avoidable.

Common Causes Of Tooth Pain

Here at Auburn Family Dental, we believe that being aware of dental problems and why they occur can help our patients to avoid them. Below are a few of the common reasons for a toothache and how they can be avoided:

  • Tooth Decay – Tooth decay is the most common cause of tooth pain. Whether it’s a tiny dental cavity or a more advanced case of decay, once it penetrates the enamel, pain will become a factor.
  • Gum Disease – Most people only associate gum disease with gum pain and inflammation. But, if left untreated, gum disease can cause pain in an otherwise healthy tooth. This is because the swelling and inflammation of the gum tissue can cause bone loss in the jaw and teeth.
  • Tooth Abscess – If tooth decay goes untreated for long enough, the decay will reach the center of the tooth (called the pulp), causing an infection. Tooth infections are incredibly painful, causing inflammation and throbbing pain, which can sometimes make it difficult to pinpoint the exact location of the pain.
  • Bruxism – Bruxism (the clenching or grinding of teeth) can cause tooth pain by wearing down the teeth and putting extreme pressure on the jaws. If bruxism is severe enough, it may even cause your teeth to chip and crack.
  • Cracked Tooth Syndrome – Concealed fractures or cracks in the teeth can cause pain in a tooth that looks completely healthy. This is known as ‘cracked tooth syndrome’ and can be a result of bruxism, traumatic injury to the tooth, or an improper bite.

The best way to combat dental problems is by maintaining good oral hygiene habits. This means brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time, with an ADA approved, fluoridated toothpaste, and flossing daily. You should also use an antibacterial mouthwash and receive a dental cleaning and exam every 6 months.

If you have a toothache and are experiencing any of the other symptoms listed above, please don’t hesitate to contact Auburn Family Dental today! Wichita's best family dentist is located near you.
