A+ A- A young girl sticking her tongue out

You probably already know all the reasons behind your tongue being an essential organ. From allowing you to taste and digest food to articulating speech and giving various for any oral health issues, you may be suffering from; a lot depends on the tongue.

However, did you know that your tongue can show signs of a non-oral issue you may be suffering from? Read on to learn how.

  • Dehydration
When your body isn't getting enough fluid to function optimally, it goes into dehydration. A dry mouth and tongue are one of the first symptoms of dehydration, as your body decreases the amount of saliva it is producing in an attempt to reserve whatever fluids it has left. A lack of adequate saliva can affect your ability to properly break down the food you may consume and affect your teeth' health.

If you find yourself with a dry mouth often, then it could be a sign that you need to increase your water intake. However, if that doesn't solve the issue, you need to consult a dentist about it.

  • Excessive Stress
If you are stressed, then you may not need your tongue to tell you that. But it is a good idea to keep a check of the physical symptoms of stress, and your tongue can be a great indicator of it. A consistently red tongue is one of the hallmarks of strain. Stress ulcers or canker sores can also be a sign that you're generally stressed.

If you notice these symptoms, then the best course of action is to practice self-care to alleviate your life stress. Simultaneously, though, do consult a dentist to ensure that you don't have any other oral issues.

If you need further assistance, you can consult Dr. Behnaz Raisdana at Auburn Family Dental. She can help you figure out any oral health issues you may be suffering from and provide you with adequate treatment.
