Cavities and tooth decay are among the world’s most common health issues. If you have teeth, you can get a cavity!

Tooth cavities are damaged areas on the surface of your teeth that eventually develop into small openings or holes on the surface of the teeth. Cavities can be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • Sugary drinks
  • Not cleaning your teeth well enough
  • Frequent snacking
  • Bacteria in the mouth
  • Any combination of the above factors

There are three different types of cavities- Smooth surface cavities, which occur on the smooth sides of your teeth; Root cavities, which develop on the surface of the tooth directly over the roots; and pit and fissure cavities, which occur on the top or chewing surface of the your teeth.

If cavities aren’t treated quickly, they can grow larger and deeper, affecting more and more layers of your teeth. This can be very painful and may even lead to losing the tooth altogether.
