Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

A+ A- Male dentist explaining an x-ray up-close

Dental X-rays are useful diagnostic tools utilized by dentists to assess your oral health. While these are very straightforward and painless, many people are still concerned about the radiation exposure that they face from dental X-rays. In this article, we will discuss their safety and importance.

Regular dental checkups are of the utmost importance, and dental X-rays can help dentists detect issues like tooth decay, impacted teeth, bone loss, and more. While x-rays do involve some exposure to radiation, this is minimal and considered safe. Dentists also take many precautions to ensure safety during dental X-rays.

In addition to using the lowest level of radiation possible, dentists also minimize the number of images taken for each patient. This makes the radiation exposure As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA principle). Patients are also made to wear a lead apron or bib during the dental X-ray to avoid any unnecessary radiation exposure. Patients with thyroid conditions are also given thyroid collars for protection. It should also be noted that exposure is minimized for children and completely eliminated for pregnant women since radiation isn’t considered safe for fetuses.

With all these safety precautions and rules in place, you can rest assured that dental X-rays are a safe and reliable tool that can be extremely helpful when it comes to diagnostics.
