Benefits of Orthodontic Headgear

A+ A- A young girl wearing orthodontic headgear

Headgear refers to any orthodontic appliance that straps around your head to apply outside pressure to your teeth. Not everyone who undergoes orthodontic treatment will need to wear headgear, but it can be an essential part of some treatment plans and provides plenty of benefits.

Benefits of Orthodontic Headgear

Below are a few benefits of orthodontic headgear:

  • Accelerates orthodontic treatment – A primary benefit of headgear is that it can speed up treatment time in cases that may otherwise be complicated and time-consuming. The additional force applied by the headgear will move the teeth more quickly.
  • Necessary in some cases – Orthodontists only prescribe headgear when it’s necessary for your particular situation. Some of these cases include when the front teeth need to move forward instead of back, when closing a large gap, or when a severe underbite or overbite affects your smile.
  • Exerts additional force – In many cases, the molars provide enough support to move the teeth. However, other situations require extra pressure to move the teeth quickly and accurately. Instead of molars, the headgear relies on a strap that goes behind the neck or head.

If you require headgear, try not to be too worried about it! Headgear usually only needs to be worn at night and will accelerate treatment. With headgear, your orthodontic braces will be off before you know it!
