Common Causes of Tooth Pain

A+ A- Woman with tooth pain

Everyone who has teeth will likely experience tooth pain at some point. People who have suffered from tooth pain can attest to the fact that it can be pretty unbearable. It doesn’t help that toothaches are known for coming on suddenly and being difficult to relieve. It can help to know what the common reasons for your tooth pain may be and how you can best relieve this pain.

Common Causes of Tooth Pain

Below are a few of the most common reasons why you may be having tooth pain:

  • Dental Cavity – The most obvious cause of a toothache would be a dental cavity. During the early stages of a cavity, you may not feel any pain at all, but as the cavity worsens, it will eventually affect the nerves of the tooth. This is when you will experience a toothache. The best way to avoid cavities is to keep regular dental appointments so we can catch and treat them while they’re still small enough to be pain-free.
  • Cracked Tooth – Symptoms of a cracked tooth may not appear until days after the tooth has been damaged. If you suspect that you’ve cracked a tooth, please contact Auburn Family Dental to make an appointment before the crack can deepen.
  • Bruxism – Bruxism is the nighttime clenching and grinding of the teeth, usually as a result of stress or a sleep disorder. As the teeth grind against each other, the enamel will wear away, causing pain and making the teeth susceptible to dental cavities. You can have a custom night guard created to protect your teeth from bruxism.
  • Gum Recession – If you are brushing your teeth too roughly, you may be damaging the gum tissue. Once the gums begin to recede, the roots of the tooth will be exposed, causing sensitivity and pain. Use a soft-bristled brush and brush gently.

There are many reasons why you may be experiencing a toothache. It’s important to keep in mind that most of the reasons for tooth pain are related to a dental problem, meaning that you should make an appointment here at Auburn Family Dental.
