Dealing With Tooth Sensitivity - From Our Dentist in Wichita Kansas

A+ A- Woman with tooth pain

Tooth sensitivity can be difficult to live with. This condition causes pain in one or more teeth, especially when the teeth are exposed to hot and cold temperatures, sugary foods or drinks, and even by simply breathing cool air. The pain caused by tooth sensitivity can be sharp and sudden.

Causes Of Sensitive Teeth

Below are a few common causes of tooth sensitivity:

  • Brushing too vigorously, which can cause the tooth enamel to wear down.
  • Tooth decay along the gum line.
  • Gum recession, which can expose the root surfaces of the teeth.
  • Gum disease or gingivitis.
  • Cracked or chipped teeth, which may be vulnerable to infection.
  • Clenching or grinding the teeth when sleeping or undergoing stress.
  • Overuse of tooth whitening products.
  • Regularly exposing your teeth to acidic food or even mouthwash.

Tooth sensitivity can cause pain, frustration, and the avoidance of properly caring for your teeth due to the pain. Fortunately, there are ways that sensitive teeth can be treated.

Treating Sensitive Teeth

Below are a few great ways to try keeping your sensitive teeth under control:

  • Continue to take good care of your teeth, even if it’s uncomfortable.
  • Use a toothbrush with soft bristles, or one made for sensitive teeth.
  • Use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.
  • Keep a food journal and track which foods are triggering your tooth sensitivity.
  • Use a fluoride mouthwash, which can decrease sensitivity.
  • Wear a night guard when you sleep if you believe you grind or clench your teeth while sleeping.

Lastly, if your tooth sensitivity is interfering with your daily life or your oral hygiene routine, please contact our dentist at Auburn Family Dental.
