Fighting Sweet Food Cravings

A+ A- Candy basket

Sweet foods are bad for your teeth because they contain sugar and carbohydrates, which are the main culprits behind bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria produce acid as a byproduct of digestion, which can attack the enamel on your teeth, leading to tooth decay and cavities.

Examples of Sweet Foods

You must try and incorporate a healthy diet to lead a quality life free of disease. Here are some examples of sweet foods that we must consume occasionally:

  1. Candy: including hard candy, gummy candy, and chocolate
  2. Desserts: such as cakes, cookies, pie, ice cream, and pastries
  3. Sweetened drinks: like soda, fruit juice, sports drinks, and energy drinks
  4. Sweetened breakfast foods: like flavored cereal, pancakes with syrup, and sweetened yogurt
  5. Dried fruit: like raisins, dates, and cranberries
  6. Sweet spreads: like jam, jelly, and honey
  7. Sweet snacks: like cookies, crackers, and cake bars
  8. Sweet sauces: like chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, and fruit-based sauces

How Does Consuming Sweet Food Harm Your Teeth?

The more sugar you consume, the more acid is produced in your mouth, and the more damage can be done to your teeth. Additionally, sugary foods and drinks often stick to the surface of your teeth, which provides a stable source of food for the bacteria in your mouth.

When the enamel of your teeth is weakened, it becomes more susceptible to damage, leading to tooth sensitivity, cavities, and, eventually, tooth loss. By reducing your consumption of sugary foods and drinks, you can help protect your teeth from decay and maintain good oral health.
