How To Eat Organic On A Budget

A+ A-

More and more people are choosing to eat organic these days. The reasons include ecological concerns, a desire to eat fresher, less processed foods, and concerns about food safety. Unfortunately, eating organic can be pricey – organic foods cost around 50-100% more than conventional foods, and prices are only going up.

For those on a budget, eating organic can seem impossible. But you don’t have to give up the benefits of organic food just because of financial concerns. Below are a few tips that we’ve put together to help our patients (even those on a budget) eat healthier:

  • It seems obvious and clichéd, but clipping coupons from the newspaper or from online sources can help you eat healthy on a budget.
  • Shop at grocery chains featuring their own organic brand – these will generally be cheaper than name brand organics.
  • Compare prices between dried and canned, fresh and frozen. Different varieties will have different costs.
  • Join an organic co-op. There are often listings online or in your local health food store.
  • Plant your own garden to grow your own produce. If you don’t have a yard or space for a garden, join a community garden.
  • Buy in bulk – but only if you can eat or store the food before spoilage.

Even if you can’t afford to buy organic, don’t be discouraged from eating conventionally grown fruits and vegetables. Experts have agreed that the benefits of fruits and vegetables (organic, locally grown, or conventional) will outweigh any possible risk from pesticides.

The best way to keep yourself and your family healthy is to visit your healthcare providers for preventative appointments. This includes dental cleanings and exams! To make an appointment for the whole family, please contact Auburn Family Dental, located in Wichita, KS.
