How to Remove Plaque on Your Teeth?

A+ A- Dental procedure

Think of plaque as a bacterial party that invites cavities, gum disease, and all sorts of dental problems. While your trusty toothbrush is your primary weapon in the battle against this sticky film, there are plenty of other oral habits you need to follow to keep your teeth in good shape.

Let’s take a look at them:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth.

Note: Choose a toothbrush with a small head to reach difficult areas. Electric toothbrushes are also effective in removing plaque.

Use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between teeth and remove plaque from areas your toothbrush might miss.

Fluoride Mouthwash

  • Rinse your mouth with a fluoride mouthwash after brushing to help reduce plaque and strengthen tooth enamel.

Healthy Diet

  • Limit sugary and starchy foods, as they contribute to plaque formation.

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help wash away food particles and bacteria.
  • Water also promotes saliva production, which aids in neutralizing acids and preventing plaque buildup.

Natural Remedies

  • Oil Pulling: Swish coconut oil or sesame oil in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes to help reduce plaque.
  • Baking Soda: Use a small amount of baking soda on your toothbrush to gently scrub away plaque. However, use this method sparingly to avoid enamel damage.

Avoid Tobacco Products

  • Smoking and using tobacco products contribute to plaque formation and increase the risk of gum disease. Quitting can improve oral health.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum

  • Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production, which helps neutralize acids and wash away bacteria.

In conclusion, maintaining a healthy, plaque-free smile requires a combination of good oral hygiene practices and regular professional dental care. Schedule dental check-ups and cleanings with a dentist in Wichita at least twice yearly.
