Signs Of a Healthy Mouth

A+ A- Woman Smiling

A healthy mouth is often a sign that your overall health is in good shape. It’s important to know the signs of dental problems but it’s also important to know the signs of a healthy mouth.

Signs Of a Healthy Mouth

Below are a few signs that your mouth is healthy:

  • Strong teeth or restorations – Dr. Raisdana will spend some time during each of your appointments checking the strength of your teeth and dental restorations, including dental fillings, crowns, or dental implants. Problems may include grinding the teeth, dental cavities, tooth decay, or damaged restorations.
  • Healthy gums – Healthy gums should be pink and firm. They should sit flush with your teeth and not recede. To keep your gums healthy, it’s important that you brush and floss them every day. If your gums are red, swollen, tender, or if they have flaps or pockets by the teeth, you may be suffering from gum disease.
  • Neutral or pleasant breath – A healthy mouth will produce either pleasant or neutral-smelling breath. The more plaque and bacteria are present in the mouth, the more the breath will begin to smell foul. To accurately test your breath, floss a few teeth or use a tongue scraper and then smell them. Persistent bad breath can be a sign of potentially serious dental issues.
  • Healthy oral tissues – Healthy tissues in the mouth (including the insides of the cheeks, the lips, and the tongue) will be firm, moist, and pink in color. If you notice swelling, painful sores, or tenderness in the oral tissues, this can be a sign of a dental problem.
