Is There A Difference Between Periodontitis & Gingivitis?

A+ A- Close-up of mouth and dental tool

Gum disease can cause many people to feel embarrassed or ashamed. However, if you suffer from gum disease, you’re definitely not alone. A study done by the CDC found that around 47% of adults in this country have suffered from some degree of gum disease at some point.

Here at Auburn Family Dental, we believe that a lack of education about these issues is largely to blame. It’s important to us that our patients are aware of gingivitis, periodontitis, and the harm that they can cause. We also want you to know what symptoms to be aware of and how to avoid these problems altogether.

Gingivitis & Periodontitis – What’s The Difference?

While both periodontitis and gingivitis are both forms of gum disease (also called periodontal disease), their major difference is their severity. Gum disease, or gingivitis, is much less severe and can be reversed. On the other hand, Periodontitis is an advanced stage of the disease and will often result in some degree of bone loss.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue, most commonly caused by plaque. You’re at risk of gingivitis if you don’t floss or brush your gum tissue. You may not feel pain in the early stages of gingivitis, but there are a few symptoms to look out for:

  • Red or swollen gum tissue
  • Increased bleeding of the gum tissue when you brush or floss

The earlier you can catch gum disease, the better the outcome will be. If you have these symptoms, give us a call.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is what will happen if your gingivitis goes untreated. The plaque will harden into tartar and the gum tissue will become so inflamed that it will start to pull away from the teeth. The space where gum tissue has pulled away is a prime location for plaque and tartar to set up shop and cause an infection.

If you don’t receive help for these problems, you risk losing your teeth altogether. It’s important to call Auburn Family Dental as soon as you notice a problem. Our family dental office is located in Wichita, KS.
