Dental emergencies are not fun. They are painful and frightening and can make you feel like your entire world is coming down. In such a situation, it is imperative to seek an emergency dentist as soon as possible. But what accounts for a dental emergency?

What Are Dental Emergencies?

A lot of dental concerns fall under the umbrella of dental emergencies. While regular dental checkups—once every 6 months—are necessary to keep your teeth in their optimal health, an emergency visit may be required in some instances.

If you experience a toothache, that’s a good sign that you need to visit a dentist ahead of your appointment. Pain is our body’s way of telling us that something doesn’t feel right and needs to be checked out. An over-the-counter painkiller can help manage a mild or intermittent toothache, in which case you should book your dentist for the next available appointment.

However, if the toothache is unbearable or the painkillers aren’t helping, it is time to call an emergency dentist. Depending on the cause of your pain, you will probably have a few more appointments. During the emergency visit, the dentist will do their best to get you out of pain.

Knocked-out teeth are one reason for which you need to see a dentist immediately. In some cases, the dentist may be able to re-implant your tooth back in if you get there in time. In the meanwhile, try to fit the tooth in its place if possible. Be careful not to touch the root of the tooth because you may end up damaging it. Only touch the crown as you attempt to put it back in the socket. Do not try to force it, as that can cause more issues. If you are not able to temporarily re-implant the tooth, take a clean paper towel and bite on it until you get to the dentist and place the tooth in a clean container and cover it with milk or saliva and bring it with you.

If you live in Wichita, KS, and experience a dental emergency, visit Auburn Family Dental as soon as possible.
