3 Myths About Fluoride Debunked

A+ A- Woman drinking a glass of water

Fluoride is a particular element that is considered a mineral and is found in many foods and water. It also protects our teeth and is a substantial contributing factor in strengthening bone density. However, some myths that have been floating around regarding fluoride may not necessarily be true.

Let’s debunk those myths by proving some facts.

Myth # 1 Fluoridated Water Leads to Fluorosis

A common myth states that people who regularly drink fluoridated water develop fluorosis, which causes changes in the appearance of tooth enamel. However, this isn’t the case, as fluorosis occurs when fluoride is consumed in excessive amounts and the amount present in water is kept to a minimum.

Myth # 2 Fluoride is Dangerous for Children

Many people believe that fluoride can be hazardous for children, so they keep them away from it. In contrast, it’s not, if consumed in appropriate amounts. Giving your children the optimum amount of fluoride is necessary if you want them to have strong teeth. The absence of fluoride will make their teeth weaker and prone to dental issues.

Myth # 3 Drinking Fluoridated Water Causes Cancer

We don’t know where this came from, but all we can tell you is that it isn’t true. Fluoride has many health benefits if consumed in the right amounts. In addition, research shows that fluoride is not known to cause any lethal health diseases such as heart conditions, diabetes, kidney problems, or even cancer. Furthermore, fluoride is considered highly safe by the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
