What is a Digital Impression?

If you’ve had braces, you’re probably aware of that annoying dental impression material that is used to obtain an impression of your teeth. And while the material hardened in your mouth, making you feel like you were about to gag, you probably wished that there was a better way to get a dental impression.

That is precisely what a digital impression is.

How Does a Digital Impression Work?

Also known as 3-D intraoral scanning, a digital impression uses the latest technology to capture a replica of your mouth. It uses a wand-like tool connected to a computer and works with advanced software to create a virtual model of the hard and soft tissues in the mouth.

These replicas tend to be a lot more accurate than the clay mold you got when getting your braces, as they cover a lot more tiny details inside your mouth. These can also be used for a variety of reasons.

As soon as the replica is created, the dentists can forward the digital impression to the labs where retainers, dentures, bridges, crowns, and anything else that you may need can be made accurately and quickly.

These digital impressions are a lot more convenient. They do not make a mess, as the traditional goopy clay material did. Since the information is stored in digital form, it can easily be transferred from one location to another without any hassle, saving a lot of time during the treatment process.

In addition to that, the accuracy of the scan can help dentists identify a lot more issues than a traditional impression can.

Overall, the digital impression is a great advancement in the dental healthcare world and will likely benefit both dentists and patients in the long run.
