Common Dental Problems

A+ A- Woman with tooth pain

Toothaches and other dental problems can be painful and cause stress. Luckily, many dental diseases are totally preventable by way of good oral hygiene habits. This will save you expensive and uncomfortable treatment procedures in the future.

Common Dental Problems

At Auburn Family Dental, we believe our patients should be well-educated about the most common dental problems and how to avoid them:

  • Gum Disease – Gum disease is an infection in the gum tissue and is the most common reason for adult tooth loss in the US. Smoking, dry mouth, and diabetes increase the risk for gum disease. Symptoms include red, swollen, tender, and bleeding gums.
  • Halitosis – Halitosis, otherwise known as bad breath, can be embarrassing. Around 85% of people with chronic bad breath are suffering from an underlying condition. These can include dental cavities, dry mouth, gum disease, and even oral cancer.
  • Mouth Sores – As long as mouth sores last less than 2 weeks, they’re typically not a concern. Common sores in the mouth include cankers and cold sores.
  • Tooth Decay – Tooth decay causes dental cavities and is one of the most common diseases in America. Tooth decay and cavities can occur at any age and are the result of built-up plaque and tartar on the teeth.

Practicing good oral hygiene is the best way to avoid common dental problems. Good oral hygiene includes brushing at least twice a day for two minutes at a time with fluoride toothpaste, flossing every day, eating a balanced diet, and visiting Auburn Family Dental every 6 months for a cleaning and a checkup.
