Keeping Your Teeth Clean While Undergoing Orthodontic Treatment

A+ A- Interdental brushing

Here at Auburn Family Dental, we know that it can be difficult to keep your teeth clean while wearing braces. However, practicing good oral hygiene is even more important during orthodontic treatment. This is because braces provide plenty of spots for plaque and bacteria to build up. If you allow your oral hygiene to suffer while wearing braces, you risk dental cavities, gum disease, tooth discoloration, and bad breath.

Oral Hygiene During Orthodontic Treatment

Below are a few tips on how to maintain your healthy smile while wearing braces:

  • Brush after each meal – While wearing braces, it’s a good idea to brush after every meal to dislodge any food that’s become stuck in the brackets or between the wires. If you’re unable to brush after a meal, at least rinse your mouth out with water.
  • Be prepared – We recommend putting together a tooth care kit to keep in a backpack, purse, car, or locker. Make sure to include a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and orthodontic wax. This kit will make it easier to remember to brush after meals.
  • One tooth at a time – When you’re brushing your teeth with braces on, it’s important to make sure you’re taking the time to brush each tooth. Spend between 5-10 seconds making sure all the surfaces of every tooth are cleaned.
  • Remember to use fluoride – Lastly, don’t forget the fluoride! You should be using fluoride toothpaste as well as fluoride mouthwash. This can help you avoid dental cavities during your orthodontic treatment.

In addition to the above tips, you should also be visiting Auburn Family Dental for a checkup and a cleaning even while undergoing orthodontic treatment. To make an appointment, please contact our Wichita, Kansas dental office today.
