Tricks For A Healthier Halloween

A+ A-

Here at Auburn Family Dental, Halloween is scary - and not for the traditional reasons! The thought of our patients indulging in bag upon bag of Halloween candy is enough to keep us up at night!

With Halloween approaching quickly, we would like to provide you with a few health tips to make sure your Halloween is fun and responsible at the same time. The last thing we want is for our tiny patients to suffer from any Halloween-related dental cavities or tooth decay.

Healthy Halloween Tips

Below are a few ways you can provide your child with a fun and healthy Halloween:

  • Start the night off with a big, healthy, meal! Making sure your children eat a healthy dinner before you send them out with their trick-or-treat bags can help suppress their appetite and reduce the chances of a Halloween sugar binge!
  • Make a habit of going through your child’s candy bag together every year. This can be used as an opportunity to educate your child on the kinds of treats that are the most damaging to his or her dental health. For example, take out any candies that are hard, chewy, or too sugary. Consider exchanging these candies for healthier treats, so your child doesn’t feel cheated.
  • Set limits regarding when and how much candy can be consumed. We recommend allowing them to have a few pieces as an after-dinner treat.
  • Give out non-candy items to trick-or-treaters. The other parents in your neighborhood will thank you! These items can include vampire teeth, glow sticks, bubbles, stickers, pencils, or mini tubs of Play-Doh.

No matter how you choose to celebrate the holiday, we here at Auburn Family Dental want to wish you a Happy (and healthy) Halloween!
