Dental crowns are a common dental restoration. Crowns help restore size, shape, functionality, and look of a tooth that is broken or misshapen. Dental crowns also protect teeth after having root canal therapy, and to close gaps in your smile.
Sometimes a dental crown can break or fall out. In this situation, you should first assess the severity. While broken dental crowns aren’t considered a dental emergency, if you’re feeling a lot of pain, Dr. Behnaz Raisdana may be able to fit you into the schedule early.
In the meantime, you can try to fit the crown back over the tooth to lessen the pain of having your tooth’s nerves exposed. Make sure that you thoroughly clean and disinfect the crown, and then, you can use tooth cement or dental adhesive to temporarily keep it on the tooth. Keep in mind that this is just a temporary measure until you can get an appointment in our office.
If you still have the crown, bring it to your appointment so that we can clean and examine it. The tooth will also be examined to ensure that the core is still structurally sound and cavity-free. If the exam and the x-rays indicate that the crown still fits over and protects the tooth, we may be able to re-cement it back on.
If the dental crown was lost or is no longer intact, the tooth will be fitted with a temporary crown while a permanent one is being created. In some cases, the tooth underneath the crown will be too damaged to receive a new one. This scenario will likely result in extraction and restoration.
